What is a dental implant?

A tooth implant is an artificial replacement of the tooth root that is anchored to a pre-drilled hole in the jawbone to hold a crownbridge or full bridge or denture on teeth implants (overdenture) in place. Dental implants are made of titanium, a material that is well tolerated (biocompatible) by the human body and easily integrates (osseointegration) with bone tissue.

During an implant dentistry process, the oral surgeon achieves a close contact between the surface of the dental implant and the tissue of the jawbone. With time the tooth implant integrates with the jawbone, creating a solid and durable support for the tooth replacement. If there is a need for the replacement of more than one tooth a dental implant supported bridge or a full denture is built on the dental implants.

In some cases when there is not enough jawbone to support a dental implant, sinus lift or bone grafting needs to be prepared.

Dental implants will enable you to eat, chew, talk, smile, laugh confidently, so much that you will even forget that your teeth are not naturally yours.

Benefits of dental implants

  • Perfect solution to replace dentures
  • Allow healthy teeth to be preserved by not having to chisel them for teeth replacements
  • Biocompatible
  • The cost of dental implant is a lifetime investment, because it is a life-long dental solution for tooth replacement
  • Not carcinogenic
  • Teeth implants do not corrode
  • Titanium dental implants are not allergic or toxic

How much does a dental implant cost?

The cost of dental implant basically depends on the complexity of the operation, the used materials and suggested prosthetic works.

Possible bone grafting or sinus lift can also affect the dental implant price. So the cost of dental implant treatments are not easy to compare.

Below you can find two typical cost examples for porcelain crown(s) on dental implants (3 unit porcelain bridge on two dental implants and full porcelain bridge on six dental implants) prepared for you to better understand the cost and see the necessary treatments.

This table has been prepared to help you better understand the different costs that come into play and see the treatments required. Please note that sinus lift and bone grafting are not included in the calculation.

Why should I get a tooth implant?

If you are tired of all the embarrassment of slipping dentures, not being able to eat the food that you love and the ineffectiveness of denture adhesives or just want to have one missing tooth to be replaced, then dental implants are the perfect solution for you.

If you are still hesitating about dental implants here are some of the possible aftermaths of missing teeth:

  • Contiguous teeth might move towards the gap, thus your denture might loosen up. This can cause you difficulty in chewing that might lead to indigestion.
  • If you don’t act as soon as possible, your jawbone starts losing bone mass with time. Bone resorption may result in a transformation of your face and you may have a strange appearance.
  • During the chewing process orts or food residues might stay in the gap that has negative effect on the neighboring teeth (both sides).
  • Furthermore, missing incisors might give you a hard time in talking and you might lose confidence in public.

Dental implant treatment procedure - how many appointments do I need?

One of the most important things you need to consider when you are thinking of the length of your dental implant treatment is your own health. Healing of a tooth implant and surrounding tissues, like gum and bone should not be rushed because it might affect your appearance, chewing or talking abilities.

To complete your dental treatment, several months or maybe a year is needed which of course asks for patience. Try to think of that your dentist has planned your treatment process carefully and he or she is doing the best for you.

Generally every dental implant treatment at our dental clinic in Budapest starts with a consultation often with an X-ray or a CT scan imaging, during which you also get your detailed cost- and treatment plan. The next step is usually the placement of the dental implant which is followed by the healing period.

After 3-6 months the oral surgeon uncovers the implant site to see how well the tooth implant has integrated with the jawbone. If everything is OK, a healing screw will be placed. Two following appointments are necessary to create and to place the final tooth replacement, which can either be a crown, a dental bridge or a fixed denture.

Don’t forget about the yearly controls which are also important to provide you with a life-long solution of replacing your tooth with a dental implant.

Dental implant recovery time – how long does it take?

In every case a certain time is needed for the dental implant to heal and to integrate with the bone (osseointegration). The length of this healing period depends on where the tooth implant is actually placed. The lower jaw heals faster usually than the maxilla (upper jaw). This means that in case of a lower jaw implantation the next step of the dental treatment can be done within 2-4 months.

According to implant dentistry guidelines, 3 to 6 months should be allowed for a maxillary dental implant to heal. Of course, personal health conditions may also influence the length of this healing period.

How do I know if I have enough bone for a dental implant?

It’s not possible to estimate for yourself if the jawbone is enough or not for an implant dentistry procedure.

An X-ray and a CT scan is necessary to evaluate your bone density and volume, and information about nearby anatomical structures (such as nerves) can also be gathered. The dentist might indicate that your bone would need support, i.e. an artificial bone replacement/grafting or sinus lift to firmly anchor your dental implants.

Remember, this part of the whole process is not harmless or secure if you are in a bad condition, so please make sure that before and during the dental implant procedure you are healthy and get enough rest.
