The short answer is yes. Tooth grinding or bruxism is not a contraindication for getting dental crowns. It might not be well-known, but tooth grinding is actually very common and in most cases it isn’t a conscious thing, since it usually happens while asleep. Please inform your dentist if you are aware of having bruxism. He/she will also be able to recognize the symptoms.
Tooth grinding puts additional pressure on the crowns, however this can be easily managed. The crown can be made up of more resistant material, and the dentist can recommend the usage of a nightguard or a mouthguard during the night to relieve the pressure on the crown. In case of bruxism, we recommend our patients to choose zirconia crown or porcelain crown instead of the all ceramic crowns.
