Pros and cons of porcelain crowns

Pros and cons of porcelain crowns

Porcelain-fused-to-metal or porcelain crowns are generally used to restore or replace decaying, damaged teeth. Crowns can be made of different materials. The advantages of porcelain crowns are their durability, their outstanding quality and their natural look. Porcelain crowns have a strong metal core, surrounded by porcelain that gives their realistic appearance. They can be used after root canal treatments for aesthetic reasons or they can also be placed onto implants to replace missing teeth.

    The advantages of porcelain crowns

    • Strength: ideal choice both incisors and molars
    • Durability: long lasting and reliable restoration
    • Natural appearance: the surface of the crowns matches the patient’s natural teeth
    • Excellent fit: the computerized CAD-CAM technology guarantees exquisite aesthetic result and fit

Porcelain crowns are made in our laboratory with a special, computerized system, using CAD-CAM technology. This makes it possible to fit them perfectly to the abutment amongst other advantages. The crown is produced in a short time in this almost completely automatized process. Our clinic only used high quality materials for the porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns.

What are the disadvantages of porcelain crowns?

Porcelain crowns have way more benefits than disadvantages. Excellent quality, durability and natural appearance. However, we must note that the appearance is less aesthetic than zirconia or full ceramic crowns. Since porcelain crowns contain metal, we do not recommend them for patients with metal allergies. Instead, they should opt for another type of replacement.

Porcelain fused to metal crown vs. zirconia crown

Even though porcelain crowns have quite a few advantages, this type of restoration cannot provide the same, highly aesthetic results as zirconia or full ceramic crowns.
