Oral surgery part 4. – Note the followings for complication-free implant

In the firstpart of our Oral Surgery series, we described common types of tooth removal. In the secondpart, we examined the bone grafting for implants. In the thirdpart, a special type of bone grafting got the main role: the sinus lift. Now it’s about implants that could end up the treatment. Why is it important to go to an experienced dentist? What problems can occur after implantation? When and why can we talk about an implant drop-out?

As with any surgical procedure, there may be complications with the implant as well. But no one should worry because most can be prevented by appropriate medical expertise.

Shortly about implant

The placement of dental implants is on average 95% successful, while at MDental Clinic Hungarythe success rate is 98.6%! However, there are some cases of post-implantation problems. The cause can be caused by an individual factor or if the treatment is made by an untrained oral surgeon.

The implant itself is a metal screw that can function as an artificial tooth root. After the healing period of implants – approx. 4-6 months – the denture can be safely placed. Of course, the treated area will be sensitive after the procedure. The main symptoms are bleeding, facial swelling, and pain in the treatment area. After the implant, however, these symptoms are alleviated, they ‘ll completely disappear within a few days. However, an inappropriate treatment can easily lead to serious changes, here are some symptoms, you should pay attention to after implantation.

When can we talk about complications after implants?

  • constant pain
  • swelling of the gums
  • bleeding
  • phlegm
  • loosing and deflection of the implant

Rare symptoms

  • receding Gums
  • discoloration
  • the implant becomes visible (a part is not in the gum)

Causes of complications

It is the most common complication of implants. There are several causes of inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis). Bacterial infections are the most common cause, as there are countless bacteria in the oral cavity. Inappropriate sterility may also be the reason. But also if the patient is a heavy smoker or diabetic. It is important to note that infections can not only occur after implantation but can also occur after years. Daily gingivitis can also cause infection if is untreated and spreading. Therefore, good oral hygiene is just as important as the regular dental check-up.

The implant can not build in

The implant is placed in the jaw-bone, which is different in the strength and quality of the individual, so it may be too weak to hold the implant. So it can not be placed properly, it won’t be stable enough. This can loosen over time, and in rare cases, it can also drop out. In such cases, the implant must be removed immediately and the treated area sutured.

For successful implantation in MDental Hospital Clinic, we first make a panoramic X-ray image or CT scan. Then our dentistsexamine the patients’ bones. If they consider it appropriate, implants can be easily placed. Otherwise, bone grafting is recommended, the types, which we have been described in our previous Oral Surgery articles.

Neighbor tooth

The root of the adjacent tooth may extend to the area of the implant. This causes a problem if the oral surgeon does not take this serious enough during the placing and hurts the neighbor roots. This can be restored by root canal treatment but unpleasant.

However, our experienced oral surgeons will examine the X-ray taken before the beginning of the treatment, so the treatment is performed accordingly.

We can talk about overloading if there is too much pressure on the implant. This blocks the buildup process and it can lead to inflammation of the gums and bone tissues. If left untreated, it can easily lead to bone loss, which can lead to loosening of the implant. In such cases, antibiotic treatment, as well as dental hygienic treatment and oral surgery are recommended.

In rare cases, hypersensitivity may occur. Implants are made of surgical metal, but the body can detect it as a foreign body and drop it out.

In our clinicour oral surgeons have placed more than 15,000 implants successfully and solved a number of problems with their expertise and experience. In addition, we give lifetime warranty for dental implants.
